Before you place a large order for custom plastic bottles, you want to hold the actual product in your hand. The good news: for stock bottle styles, most manufacturers offer free samples. You only pay the courier fee. This article explains how the process works and what to check when the sample arrives.
Why samples matter
A photo and a specification sheet cannot tell you how a bottle feels, how the cap threads seat, or how the wall thickness holds up in your filling line. Samples reveal the details that decide whether your product launches smoothly.
How the sample process works
- Stock bottles: free samples, usually dispatched within 3 – 5 working days. You pay the express fee (DHL, FedEx or UPS).
- Custom bottles: sample molds are chargeable. The sample mold fee is often deducted from the production mold cost if you proceed with the order.
- Printed samples: you pay for the printing plate if it is new. Ask whether the plate fee is refundable with a production order.
Send your request with the exact bottle style, capacity, cap type and color. The more precise the request, the faster the sample matches what you expect.
What to check when the samples arrive
- Weight and wall thickness: weigh the bottle and compare it with the spec. A much lighter bottle than quoted means material was cut.
- Thread and cap fit: screw the cap on and off. It should seat cleanly without cracking or sticking.
- Drop test: fill the bottle with water, cap it, and drop it from waist height. Check for cracks at the base and neck.
- Printing quality: check registration, ink coverage and durability. Rub the print to test adhesion.
- Smell and taste: food and beverage bottles should not transfer any plastic odor.
- Filling line compatibility: if you use an automatic filler, check the bottle mouth dimensions against your filling nozzles.
Questions to ask with your sample request
Bundle these questions into the same email so you get a complete answer in one reply:
- Is this bottle from a stock mold? What are the MOQ and lead time for the quantity I need?
- What colors are available, and is color matching included?
- What decoration options work with this bottle (silk screen, shrink sleeve, label)?
- Do you hold certificates such as FDA, EU 10/2011 or ISO 9001 for this product?
- Can the sample mold fee be applied toward the production mold?
